Prosthechea pentotis 'Mendenhall' (syn. baculus)
This cultivar received an 82 point Award of Merit from the American Orchid Society in May of 2003. We have never tissued cultured or seed propagated. This awarded form of a rather unusual species is found in Southern Mexico down through Central and South America, growing in wet humid forests with high amounts of light. We have had the most success growing these in a well draining fir bark medium that does not become sour with frequent summertime watering. During the warm months and active growth water and fertilize often but keep very dry during the cooler winter season and Do Not Overwater.
Blooms will appear in late spring through early summer, usually for us in May-June. Flowers are a creamy greenish white with beet red stripes on the lip. Bloom stems are short, emerging only an inch or so from the sheath. This interesting orchid is also Very Fragrant! Thin leaves are paired atop long slender teardrop shaped pseudobulbs.
This division is growing in a 6.5" pot with 6 mature bulbs. Plant photo shows the exact plant you will receive. Bloom photo shows the flowers on this variety.
